Wondering If You Should Repair Or Replace Your Air Conditioning? Our Advice

air conditioning installation San Antonio, TX areaAir conditioners are tough machines. They work hard to keep your home comfortable in our Texas heat. They are also sensitive in certain ways. Components can wear out, lubricants can dissipate and fail, belts wear out  and grime collects in coils. These problems make them work even harder to provide cooling. They also can shorten your air conditioner’s life.

If your equipment is 10 years old or older and hasn’t had annual preventive maintenance in a while, you may want to consider a replacement. A 10-year-old air conditioner begins to wear out parts. It also is costing you more in energy than a new model would. New, high-efficiency air conditioners can save you significant money on your cooling costs.

If your air conditioner has problems every year or several times during the cooling season, that’s another sign it might be time to replace it. Frequent air conditioning repair gets expensive. You could be channeling that money into a new unit that saves money on utility bills.

If your equipment is only five or six years old and running well, keep it. However, if it’s that old and performing ineffectively, you could be facing one or more of a number of problems. Maybe your air conditioner was poorly installed. Maybe it’s too big — oversized units for the home can lead to premature failure. Maybe the problem is with your ductwork — leaking ducts can cause A/Cs to work too hard, not to mention waste energy. A certified HVAC professional can evaluate your system and offer guidance on whether it’s savvier to replace or repair your equipment.

But if it’s past a decade old, you may want to consider upgrading. If it’s fairly new and causing no problems, have it serviced once a year and keep going.

When you’re ready to upgrade or just want to have your system evaluated, contact us at Jon Wayne Heating & Air Conditioning. Our technicians are experts at air conditioning repair.
